Longest-reading tag in our on-metal range: 13 m on metal with a 4 W fixed reader from a 69 × 23 × 7 mm ABS body. NXP UCODE 8; 902–928 and 866–868 MHz.
OM-170 is a compact ABS-encased UHF tag for metal assets that must be identified from a distance: returnable metal containers and cages, steel racking, machinery and tooling, and metal-bodied equipment moving through logistics hubs. At 69 × 23 × 7 mm it is the smallest of our ABS tags, yet it carries the longest range quoted anywhere in our on-metal line.
The datasheet gives 13 m on a metal surface with a 4 W fixed reader and 5 m with an Impinj R2000-based handheld. The tag uses an NXP UCODE 8 chip and is listed for 902–928 MHz and 866–868 MHz. We offer it as OM-170-US and OM-170-EU so every order is matched to your reader's regional band, and we confirm the band with you before dispatch.
The 7 mm profile keeps the tag low on doors, frames and panels where a thicker housing could snag, and the ABS body has a hole at each end for screws or rivets.
The 13 m figure assumes a 4 W reader and a tag mounted flat on metal; validate distance at the power level your region and installation allow, with the antenna you will deploy. The datasheet does not list hole size or an adhesive option, so check fasteners on samples. If you need 860–960 MHz coverage in one part, see OM-150 or OM-160.

Plan RFID for warehouse management: fixed readers and circular antennas at dock doors, conveyor tunnels, handheld cycle counts and on-metal asset tags.
Build an RFID asset tracking system: on-metal, ceramic and tie-on tags matched to each asset, handheld audits, smart cabinets and IP67 HF heads for tooling.
With a 4 W fixed reader and the tag on a metal surface. With an Impinj R2000-based handheld the datasheet quotes 5 m.
Order OM-170-EU for 866–868 MHz systems and OM-170-US for 902–928 MHz systems. We confirm the band against your reader before dispatch.
Yes. At 69 × 23 × 7 mm it is shorter and thinner than OM-150 (135 × 22 × 12 mm) and OM-160 (79 × 31 × 9.5 mm), and it has the highest quoted range of the three.
Yes. The NXP UCODE 8 chip is EPC Gen2, so any Gen2 reader-writer can encode your numbering on site.
Compare UHF RFID reader bands by country, including US, EU, UK, China, India and Japan. Understand ERP, EIRP, channel conditions and radio approvals.
Wire a UHF reader's D0, D1 and ground to your controller, match 26/34-bit Wiegand, size 12 V power and trigger the barrier by relay. Diagrams included.
Yes, RFID works on metal with tags built for it. See why metal detunes standard tags, compare ABS, PCB, ceramic and label tags, and test read range properly.
