How to choose uhf antennas

An antenna shapes the read zone as much as the reader power setting. The AN range includes circular-polarized panel and PCB formats, plus a compact ceramic option for constrained installations. Compare the actual beam, band and connector specification instead of selecting by gain alone.

AN-110 and AN-120 have published IP67 ratings. A bare PCB antenna such as AN-130 needs a suitable enclosure; its indoor listing should not inherit a panel model’s protection rating. Ceramic antennas also require checking the stated bandwidth against the operating band.

Include the reader-port connector, cable connector and cable length in the RFQ. Longer cables add loss, and mounting metal can change the result. Test orientation and coverage using the intended tags. The antenna polarization guide explains the practical trade-offs.

Guides and applications

Parking

RFID Vehicle Access Control & Parking

Plan an RFID vehicle access control system: UHF windshield tags, long-range lane readers, Wiegand controllers and barrier triggering. Lane BOM and samples.

Asset Tracking

RFID Asset & Tool Tracking

Build an RFID asset tracking system: on-metal, ceramic and tie-on tags matched to each asset, handheld audits, smart cabinets and IP67 HF heads for tooling.

Frequently asked questions

Can any antenna be used with any UHF reader?

Match operating band, impedance, connector and permitted configuration. The listed AN products use 50 Ω connections, but connector and bandwidth still differ.

Are all antennas weatherproof?

No. AN-110 and AN-120 list IP67; AN-130 is a bare indoor PCB antenna. Provide the protection required for the selected product and its connections.

Does higher antenna gain always give a better result?

No. Gain and beam shape affect coverage, and cable loss, tag orientation and the installation matter. Select the antenna for the required zone and verify it on site.
