Dual-Frequency USB RFID Reader/Writer, HID/CDC Switchable: overview

The PC-140 combines 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz in a single USB desktop reader/writer, so one unit on the enrollment desk handles legacy EM proximity cards as well as MIFARE, DESFire, ICODE and NFC credentials. It is aimed at integrators who issue cards for access control, time attendance, toll collection, anti-theft and guard-patrol systems.

On the HF side it supports ISO/IEC 14443A/B, ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 18092, which covers MIFARE Classic, DESFire EV1/EV2, Ultralight and Ultralight C, ICODE, CPU cards and NFC Forum Type 1, 2, 4 and 5 tags. On the LF side it reads EM4xxx-family 125 kHz cards.

Two working modes suit two styles of software. In active mode the reader reports every card it detects without being asked; in passive mode it waits for a read or write command from your application. The USB port runs either as HID or as a CDC virtual COM port, a configuration tool updates reader parameters, and firmware is upgraded over USB.

Integration notes

The unit runs from USB at 4.8–5.2 V, drawing ≤ 100 mA in standby and ≤ 150 mA while working. It measures 110 × 80 × 16.2 mm, comes in a plain black housing with no logo on a 1,500 mm cable, and is RoHS compliant. Rated operating conditions are −20 to +60 °C at 20–80% non-condensing humidity.

More features

  • 4.8–5.2 V USB supply, ≤ 100 mA standby, ≤ 150 mA operating
  • 110 × 80 × 16.2 mm unbranded black housing, 1.5 m cable, RoHS

Where the PC-140 is used

  • Standardizing on one enrollment reader for sites that run both EM proximity cards and MIFARE or DESFire credentials
  • Encoding NFC Forum tags and ICODE labels for asset records or guard-patrol checkpoints
  • Enrolling time-attendance cards over a driver-free USB HID connection
  • Building card read/write into custom software through the CDC virtual COM port

PC-140 FAQ

What is the difference between HID and CDC mode?

HID mode presents the reader to the host as a USB human-interface device, while CDC mode presents it as a virtual COM port for software that exchanges serial commands. The mode is switchable, so one stocked unit fits both kinds of integration.

Does it read 125 kHz cards?

Yes. It reads EM4xxx-family 125 kHz cards alongside 13.56 MHz cards and tags, so a single reader covers mixed-credential sites.

Which NFC tags are supported?

NFC Forum Type 1, 2, 4 and 5 tags. For Type 3 (FeliCa) or SAM-based issuing, choose the 13.56 MHz PC-150.

What power does it need?

It runs from a USB port at 4.8–5.2 V and draws ≤ 100 mA in standby and ≤ 150 mA while working.

Is the housing branded?

No. The standard unit ships in a black housing without a logo, which suits integrators who add their own labeling.
